BIODIVERSITY

We have achieved our biodiversity flag, but will continue developing this area.

We have learnt all about the life cycle of the frog and we have created a powerpoint presentation explaining it.

We have been keeping an eye on all the plants and animals growing around us even in our own homes and we have noticed the beautiful primroses and violets coming up.

Nuala came back to do a bog workshop with us and we had so much fun learning about the plants and animals that live on the bog. Nuala showed us lots of exciting plants like the sundew. The sundew is a plant that can eat flies and other insects! Nuala brought over a newt aswell. The newt looks like a small frog. Some of us thought the newt was really cute and some of us were scared of it even though it is so much smaller than us.

We have been keeping an eye on the plants and animals in the school around us and we have noticed the daffodils that are coming up. There are lots of exciting things happening in Spring and we always update our biodiversity notice board when we see new plants or animals.

We are planning to create a wild flower garden in our school to add to the flowers planted by the infant classes and 3rd and 4th class in our window boxes and planters. 

We would like to say a big thank you to Christy Fitzpatrick in 6th class who made our new bird table which takes pride of place in our front flower bed among our newly planted flowers.

Our Bug Hotel!

Ricky Whelan came in to talk to us about biodiversity. We talked about all the habitats and animals that could be living around our school we also looked at lots of different animals and habitats in a presentation he showed us. 
We then created our bug hotel with his help using different materials we had collected e.g. crates, toilet roll holders, twigs, straw and lots of other items. We assembled these items and made our bug hotel.
